How to play Pickleball: A Comprehensive Guide for Beginners

Pickleball is a fast-paced and engaging racquet sport that has taken the world by storm. It combine elements of tennis, badminton, and table tennis.  Pickleball game is accessible to players of all ages and skill levels. No matter what skill level you are at, this guide will provide you the basic to get started.

Getting Started:

  1. Court size: Pickleball court is like a miniature tennis court. The net is set at 36 inches in the centre and 34 inches at the sidelines. The court has specific zones with the centre being the non-volley zone or kitchen for short. Players cannot volley the ball in this zone.

  2. Equipment: You will need a solid paddle and a plastic ball with holes like a wiffle ball. Paddles varies in materials and weighs. Choose one that suits your playing style. Comfortable athletic shoes and appropriate clothing are also essential.

Basic Rules:

  1. Serving:
    • The game begins with an underhand serve diagonally across the net.
    • The server must keep one foot behind the backline and hit the ball below the waist.
    • The ball must clear the net and land in the opposite diagonal service court.
  2. Volleying and Non-Volley Zone:
    • Players cannot hit the ball in the air if in the non-volley zone (aka kitchen). It needs to bounce before you can hit it.

    • You can volley outside the kitchen or after the ball has bounced in the kitchen.
  3. Scoring:
    • Pickleball is scored on by the serving team and not the receiving team.

    • Games are usually played to 11 points, and a team must win by at least two points.

Techniques and Strategies:

  1. Dink Shot:
    • A soft shot that lands in the non-volley zone, forcing opponents to hit a low ball.
    • Use the dink shot strategically to control the pace of the game and set up your shots.
  2. Third Shot Drop:
    • After the serve and return, the third shot is crucial for gaining control of the net.
    • Hit a soft, low shot that lands in the non-volley zone, making it difficult for opponents to attack.
  3. Ground strokes:
    • Get good at your forehand and backhand ground strokes to keep the ball in play. Aim to move your opponents around the court to get the edge over them.
  4. Communication and Positioning:
    • Effective communication with your partner is essential for successful doubles play.
    • Position yourself to cover the court well with your partner.
